Release notes

Smartleggio 1.0 is released!

We are happy to announce that the first public version of our app, Smartleggio 1.0, has just been released.

The first public version of Smartleggio is now available for downloading and installation. The application runs on iPad/iPhone devices with iOS 13.0 or newer or on any Android tablets and smartphones with Android 6 or newer. Please see the downloads page for the link appropriate for your platform.

Features

In terms of features the first release includes an ability to read, play and automatically turn pages for scores in MusicXML, PDF and the Smartleggio’s own file format, with the support for PDF being backed by an experimental OMR engine built into the app. The scores can be organized to playlists, annotated with handwritten notes and edited to alter their repeats structure useful for playback and performance. For MusicXML scores the app can also perform minor musical content edits, like removing some objects or changing note pitches.

If preferred, the score’s pages can be turned manually using swipe gestures or a Bluetooth page turner pedal connected to the device. For page turners and swipe up/down gestures the application uses content-aware page turning which shows the next pages of music taking into account the stucture of the score’s repeats.

Smartleggio also provides an optional access to the online library of piano scores to make it easier to try the app and to help in searching for the scores to play.

Smartleggio’s file format

In addition to MusicXML and PDF, Smartleggio introduces its own file format which tries to combine advantages of MusicXML (full knowledge of the musical content by the app, an ability to zoom and reflow the score as needed) with advantages of scores in the PDF format (retaining the original look and the content of the score). This format provides the necessary knowledge of the musical content to the app and allows adaping the content to the phone or tablet screen sizes while making it possible to preserve the original visual style of the score. It is possible also to zoom the content of such files if they contain the necessary information.

In order to prepare such files we plan to provide plugins and converters for different musical software. Currently a plugin for MuseScore 3 is available for downloading.

The Online Library available through the app also uses scores in this file format.
